My Reply:
I do not read original play which given by Harold Pinter. But I know some dialogues which discussed by you in classroom. It was of ‘Comedy of Menace’ which dialogues you read carefully with the tone of the play. At that time I got the situation of ‘Comedy of Menace’ which helps to understand the movie ‘Comedy of Menace’ in batter way. We do not have time to discuss the whole play in the classroom but like some important portion of the play becomes helpful to understand main theme of the play. So ‘Thanks….’ for discussed it. Here, I wants to discussed the play which we discussed in the class and movie version that made by William Friedkin.
The play ‘The Birthday Party’, divided in three parts uses a single setting, the living-dining room of a seaside boarding house somewhere on the coast of England. When the movie, we see the same living-dining room but also see the outside setting of ‘Street’ where the boarding house exist. It throws some light of other aspects which made different than the play which shows characters’ condition of mind. For Example: Airplane landing. In starting part of the movie, we see the Stanley who stands out of the boarding house after the discussion with Meg. At that time, we heard noise of Airplane then Stanley suddenly turns in the house. It shows outer situation which is not well for him, because of his unknown past. It shows ‘Fear of Unknown’ which find to him. Here, we see that Stanley escape to present situation which has politicized by others. So the movie shows ‘Fear of unknown’ of Stanley by used Airplane sound which has become symbol.
In play, we find two female characters. Among them, female character of Lulu’s two scenes omitted from the Movie because of ‘Ambiguity’ in the play. All three part of the play, she appears in few times. In Act 1, she tries to tempt Stanley but he is unresponsive. This sense, an opinion may be expressed that Lulu is well on the way to become a prostitute. She may also be taken as symbol of women being used as tool or toy for pleasure by man. She also invited guest in Birthday Party. In Act 2, on Goldberg’s invitation, she sits on his lap during party and encourages him to flirt with her. In Act 3 she re-appears, rather grieved and complaining about Goldberg’s last night behavior. It seems she has been seduced by him. Here, we see ‘Ambiguity’ about the way Pinter portray a character. She has actively participated with Goldberg, why she has appeared with complaining about it. In Movie, we do not see that scene which in Act-3. It has not clarified anything, what she is complaining. So that Lulu omitted from the Movie in two scenes which has vital reason.
Movie has successful in creating menacing effects. It suggest that although ‘Fun’ rather than frightening or menacing in a vague and undefined way. Even as characters’ laugh, the audience is unsettled, ill at ease and uncomfortable. For Example: Lulu’s laugh, it shows her life’s bitterness which she takes lightly. Her laughter also shows mockery upon herself. Then one incident, when MacCann and Goldberg came and Stanley ran away with fear from kitchen. It shows ‘Fear’ toward society and its politics upon his self. Then after in Act 2, we see Game played at party-Blind man’s bluff is the most horrible scene of the movie/play. These three scenes show upcoming danger on characters and most toward protagonist Stanley.
In Play/Movie, some symbols in Pinter are used to substitute oral language. His most recurrent symbol is the ‘Newspaper’, a means of communication that the dramatist uses ironically. The news paper becomes the typical object of news media, which should supposedly fulfill a communicative role, acts as a hindrance to communication. Pinter’s characters hide themselves behind the newspaper in an effort to dodge conversation so, a characteristic Pinteresque scene is a husband (reading the news paper) and his wife trying to make conversation unsuccessfully. The news paper is torn to pieces, that scene movie shows perfectly by using sound which has show slow activity to torn but its influence upon Petey and Stanley in deep. That Scene, I enjoy a ‘Torn’ sound of paper where McCann menacingly rips a paper sheet into ‘Five equal Parts’. News paper is connection to reality as Petey is reading it and Meg is completely unaware about reality, she has her own imaginative world without concerning with reality. At end of the play, Petey hides these pieces means he is hiding reality of Stanley as he is also torn by two fellows.
In the Movie, Camera is well positioned and shows characters’ mental condition. When Stanley becomes coward, that time camera follows him and shows fearful face as surround of him. When, Goldberg and McCann are trapped to Stanley that time camera becomes powerful to shows the pressure of Stanley which done by those two. The game blind man’s bluff also plays a vital role to understand technique of camera which successfully made by the director. Here, we find Stanley in trap when he plays a game. All doors also symbolically showed by director. When doors are opening and closing that time camera lead towards it. It has not materially meaning but psychological condition of the characters’ mind. Thus, the position of camera becomes primary to understand the story.
I agree that the movie shows very well: “Pinter restored theater to its basic elements: an enclosed space and unpredictable dialogue, where people are at the mercy of one another and pretense crumbles.”
Yes, this movie should involve as satisfactory. I watch only this movie by William Friedkin in the class. So I give priority to it. But I do not watch other movie version so how I say that it’s impossible to imagine a better film. In your material I found one article by Harriet and Irving Deer about the film and the play by Pinter. I read this article which also interesting which described comparison and contrast between Play and movie. I do not see movie but also get review to read this article. But I not judge Pinter’s movie through this article. Because it has requires to screening for judge. If I was director of the movie so I put music effect. Because, background music has also may help to show the characters’ condition of mind, which lake in the movie which you show. Without Background music I has also understand movie but if it put so it helps to understand in better way.
